Artist's impression of the merchant vessel, the Norman Court, by Edwin Meayers

As merchants, Barings frequently chartered sailing ships and, from time to time, operated their own vessels. In the late 1860s and 1870s, the house managed two ships. The finest was the clipper ship, the Norman Court, built in 1869, the same year as the Cutty Sark. The Norman Court sailed between Britain, the Far East and Australia.
